Mark, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I lost my Father 4 years ago this July 14. It certainly leaves a big hole in your life. Blessings.

Mark,
I can't believe your dad has been gone 25 years! Seems just like yesterday that I was hanging around the Midway Hobby Shop playing pinball, listening to your dad talk about HO and N-Guage trains and doing Dippity Glas leaves and such with your mom.
I was lucky after high school to still be in town and become even better friends with them. We (Therese Wagner and I)would go to parish or K of C dances with them and then to the truck stop for breakfast afterwards.
I will never forget the time I went with you and your folks to see a movie at the Richmond Square theatre and I pushed you around the parking lot in a ayr-way shopping cart.
I have so many wonderful memories of your mom and dad as well as you and Tim. I remember many times at the house your mom listening to Ferrante and Teicher. I think she even had a Christmas album that she played on Christmas eve.
I just wanted you to know that I had great respect for your dad and mom both. They were a second set of parents for me.
Peace my friend!

Well, you're not an idiot ranting about Android...I do agree with somethings you said in your Android First Year article.

1. Though while you can't search the market online(don't really understand why not), searching on the phone's app market works well. Can't think of anything that could be improved personally. Maybe dynamic searching of the app market as you type, but that's about it. The new App Market that came out with Donut had a few good improvements(like screenshots and a better browsing layout) and should help apps sell more.

2. Not much was said about Donut...this is true. But people did know about Cupcake and will know about Eclair too as they were/will be bigger updates. Still, this won't make the OS fail. Unlike the iPhone, you don't need to do much to get an update. You just hit a few buttons when the notification arrives, I hate having to connect my iPhone to a computer for updates.

This won't make or break Android. But if anything, cloud updates are a big advantage.

3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?s=9f7fdf1a53b3ef907dd7c3c965d18757&f=448

4. Having Android phones on different careers is more important than having one phone on one career imo. Plus, AT&T's network is completely screwed right now. I'm on AT&T with my G1 and man the quality of service just goes down and down. Dropped calls in this day and age are not acceptable.

Verizon and Sprint having Android will greatly increase the Android install base. I can't complain...more people means better apps.

Plus, competition is only a good thing. Having different Android phones competing makes manufs produce better phones and will drive prices down. It's a win win for everyone.

You're not forced into a market with the iPhone where Apple heavily influences the prices. That's basically a monopoly which is always bad for consumers.

5. Android has it all. It just needs better marketing. Like you said, Apple is a marketing company that happens to sell technology. If Bose can sell those cardboard things they call "speakers", anyone can sell anything given the right marketing.

I was waiting to see who would come up with the "5 reasons why the android, may not beat the iphone". It's you.

Fair enough. I respect your post and opinions and kudo's to you for keeping it "tame". :-)

I think you've it the nail(s) on the head. One major one being the marketing factor. Android definitely needs a marketing arm power if it's ever going to compete with the iPhone. But, I wonder ....

You did say that android is improving slowly, at least it's improving. And yes, most of the apps that are being created are from boys interested in building tower defense games, however, there are older boys that have seemed to grow up a bit and are looking at developing apps aimed at the masses to make their lives just a little bit easier. They are out there. They are just so busy developing that, heck, they don't even know how to market themselves, and that's the truth.

Not sure if Google will jump on their own band wagon and get behind the marketing of it, in a huge way, the way Apple has done. They may or they may not. I can't quite put a finger on it yet if they will.

It just seems to me that Google does what it does and lets others market their stuff for them.

Believe me, realize the potential of the android platform, and yes, just because you are good does not mean you are a winner. Not anyway, and that's where I figure I come in.

Hello, I would like to introduce you to the soon to be FAVE Android PR Gal (a.k.a. me). One step at a time, baby steps, hitting up the right people, tickling their funny bones, etc .. etc ... :-)

BTW, I am an apple fan, always have been but I do not own an iPhone. I only have the old 12" Powerbook and last years iPod Nano. My phone is a Nokia N95 and I mostly use my Eee PC to do my work. (My Dell of 2005 is temporarily on a sabbatical). But I do believe in the android platform, definitely.

Good post by the way. I will now make a blog entry about your post :-)

Cheers!
